Bhendi Stew / Vendaikkaai Mandi

 This Vendaikkaai Mandi is Authentic  Chettinad Special..This light,tasty,creamy,mildly spicy sauce is really delicious.An interesting flavours and textures is used in this dish.A simple way of this cooking which retain their full flavour.

Lady's Finger - 250 gm
chopped big onion or shallots 10 -  1
chopped tomato - 1
chopped garlic - 1 tbsp
green chilli & dried red chilli - each 3
oil - 1-2 tbsp
mustard seed & urad dal -each  half tsp
channa dal - 1 tsp
fenugreek - 1/4 tsp
curry leaves and coriander leaves - few
tamarind - small lemon size
thick coconut milk -  quarter cup
rice rinsed water - 1 - 1. 1/2 cup 
salt - to taste.
Serves - 3-4.

Steps to follow:

Rinse, pat dry and cut the bhendi into 1-2 inch size pieces.

 Get ready with all the ingredients.
 Soak tamarind in half cup water drain and keep aside.
 Rinse the rice and drain the water and keep aside.
 Heat oil in a pan add mustard seeds,urad dal,channa dal,fenugreek,red chilli and curry leaves stir well,when it splutters add chopped garlic,onion and slitted green chillies..
 Stir well for 1 minute.
 Add chopped tomato and add little salt and stir again.
 Then add bhendi and stir well until dry.
 Add tamarind water and rice rinsed water. let it boil till the raw smell goes.
 Add coconut milk, mix and check the salt.
 Let it boil in low flame for 2 minutes. Switch off the stove.
 Add chopped coriander and mix well. Keep it closed for half an hour  and serve.
 Serve with hot plain rice and with suitable side dishes.
